Eben Pagan: An Incomplete Explanation Of “The Free Line”

I’ve watched Eben Pagan with some awe since 2003 - before John Reese talked about him on Traffic Secrets.

It’s been obvious for some time that the dude is a marketing Jeenius.

He was (and remains) one of the few people who ever successfully implemented a multi-page-sequential sales letter.

(A multi page sequential sales letter is one in which the reader is unable to discover that he’s being pitched to until the call to action. It’s the holy grail of sales letters online… because it prevents prospects from scrolling to the bottom of the letter immediately to see what is going to be pitched to them. Eben’s use of the format is particularly masterful because it not only prevents the scroll to the bottom, but it builds credibility and reciprocation in the process. Check out Double Your Dating to see it.)

Eben was also one of the first people who published an e-zine which made extensive use of reader questions - which was this beautiful self creating social proof system (again, go to Double Your Dating and sign up to his newsletter to see it in action).

Anyway, so inevitably Eben got into the Internet Marketing Guru business (and no one could fault him for that).

And I (of course) am on his mailing list. Today Eben wrote about something he calls “The Free Line”:

“MY EXPERIENCES MOVING THE FREE LINE

Over the past ten years or so, I have had
some AMAZING successes by Moving The Free
Line in business.

I taught real estate professionals to give
away free home-buying and home-selling
reports… I taught businesses to give away
free trainings… and I created tons of
valuable pieces of content myself. And gave
it all away. FREE.

The results?

Not only have I grown several successful
businesses rapidly, but I’ve also generated
MASSIVE traffic to my websites and very
high numbers of opt-in subscribers to my
lists.”

This is only part of his email, but it sums up generally what his point was - which is to give something away FREE to the market which is perceived to have the same value as their FIRST PURCHASE.

Which is a sound concept.

HOWEVER: It’s hard to describe just how difficult doing that really is. Eben is a master marketer. His products themselves are their own greatest marketing.

Not because of the information they contain, but because of the way he presents the information. Until you are able to present information using the Cialdini principles, you will struggle to turn that first “Free Gift” into the first sale.

Just giving away what you know for free is NOT going to do it for you.
