Do You Make These Blog Rush Mistakes?

New To Snowboardjohn.com?
Here are a few posts the other readers recommend you check out.

There’s no question in my mind that Blog Rush is a great service - which is going to succeed in a big way.

Having said that, those who use Blog Rush will not necessarily gain much value from it - because they don’t understand how Blog Rush fits into their Business Blogging Strategy.

So let me break down what Blog Rush does, and then, how to gain maximum benefit from it.

First of all, Blog Rush is clearly a part of a traffic generation strategy. Not to be confused with lead generation. Lead generation is what you do once you get the traffic - but you have to gain people’s attention FIRST.

To get someone’s attention with Blog Rush, the primary thing you need to do is write COMPELLING 7 WORD HEADLINES (or approximately no more than 40 characters including spaces). This guarantee’s your whole headline will be syndicated in Blog Rush’s widget without getting cutoff.

Several common mistakes I’ve seen already is people who are:

  • Writing LONG headlines which get cutoff before you can understand the topic of the post.
  • Crafting headlines which only make sense if you’ve read the post before you’ve read the headline.
  • Not taking the time to create interesting headlines that people care about.

To write a good “I’VE GOTTA READ THAT” Blog Rush headline, you must follow these simple rules:

  1. Keep it simple. Don’t use “slash” multi word variations of the same thing like “authority/expert”. This is not only confusing to read, but it also takes up valuable character space.
  2. Appeal to everyone’s ADD. People are clicking on Blog Rush story links because they are goofing off and want to be distracted. So play to that and write things that sound juicy and entertaining.
  3. Never forget that everyone cares about themselves. Try and make all your headlines relevant to the readers self interest. People who want to be distracted can then rationalize that they are REALLY learning something if they click on a link which is supposedly work related *wink* *wink*
  4. Don’t lie in your Blog Rush headline. People will not only hit the “back” button faster then greased lightning if your story doesn’t deliver on what the headline promised, but they will be FAR LESS LIKELY to click on your future headlines.

Ok, so once you’ve gotten some traffic from Blog Rush, you want to turn that traffic into leads. That is, people who keep reading your blog and eventually buy something from you.

Sadly this is much harder than it sounds. As most people who are successful with social “stimulus” media will attest, many people who read your story are Social Media Stimulation Sluts who will be off to get their next hit before you can get the words “RSS Button” out of your mouth.

So, we must play to the readers stimulus seeking nature to keep them on our own blogs.

To do this, we need two things:

  1. The “Related Posts” Plugin, and
  2. Other Post “Crack” (like the drug “Crack”) stories.

If you follow the same formula I just gave you on how to write Blog Rush headlines, to write your Blog Headlines, you’ll be going in the write (hehe cheesy I know) direction. Some more places to get good headline idea’s is This Gary Halbert Newsletter.

Then, just keep going at it until you get traction.

Also, in closing here are some other mistake’s to avoid:

  1. Don’t make your blog’s advertising look like The Strip on Vegas. It pisses people off and keeps them from liking you as they feel you are putting your revenue ahead of your usefulness.
  2. Don’t offer paid blog reviews. Seriously I can’t understand why people do this. It makes you look like a prostituting beggar who is unable to monetize with something legitimate.
  3. Don’t put the Blog Rush widget above your own site’s navigation. If you can’t understand why, you’re beyond my help.
  4. Get rid of those RIDICULOUS social media links at the bottom of every post. The only people who have the power to get any of your posts ranking well in Social Media Networks don’t need the little buttons to do it. If they think you’re worthy, they’ll submit regardless. And those 2 Diggs you got could have been other actions which resulted in a MUCH BIGGER payoff. It’s a waste of blog real estate to have those buttons.

Hope you found that helpful :-)

Very helpful information for all bloggers to take to heart. Thanks a bunch!

    2. Michael Clark Says:

I’m wondering about the content areas/topics that BlogRush is using. I’d love to see some stats on the clickthrough rates in different topic areas. I’d guess that “Entertainment” will have a very different rate than “Financing and Investing” will.

Your last paragraph “If you found this page useful…” is that created by a plugin, or by you simply entering that text into each blog entry?

Okay - what if you want to use Blog Rush to get really targeted readers and you are not interested in the SMSS readers? Would you suggest a different strategy for the headlines? Like really descriptive of the content? I know you implied that also but I would rather have fewer clicks from truly interested readers.

    7. techminds Says:

Thanks for the tips. The sites in the network are from the cat/tag they chose? not our content, right? I chose technology, for obvious reasons and when i viewed the widget, the first link was the words “boob” repeating and the last link was in the chinese font or something? i added the word to the filters etc - but i’m hoping i won’t have too in the future? We’ll be testing this week to see if we keep this - but so far so good - the concept is great.

    26. BlogRush User Says:

Excellent tips - especially about keeping the title to 7 words - 40 characters.

After looking at the blogs I installed the BlogRush widget in (all WordPress blogs and all working fine with BlogRush) and seeing how most of the titles appear, I couldn’t agree more - it’s so obvious, yet it needed to be pointed out.

Another thing it made me realize is that I need to go back to the control panel and change the Blog Title so that it also creates “click appeal”.

@ Karen Davis: I know what you’re saying, but, for something like Blog Rush, you need to understand the context the tool is operating in. Many people, including myself, use them as a way to manage interesting content i want to refer back to. I also use them because people who visit my social media space may also like them. Thats the point.

Keep them there people. You wont loose any adsense clicks or affiliate sales. In fact, you will get more.

Content is king. Focus on the content and let your users decide whats good or bad about the other things / widgets / stuff you have on site.

    72. DollarByTheMinute Says:

Just one more thing, what this Snowboard guy says that i totally AGREE with is the ‘related posts link’ plugin. That is an absolute must for every blog. It works, its a bit clunky, in that you have to save your post first, then go back to editing it to see the ‘related links’ menu, but it is manageable. It really gives a site a nice, user friendly feel.

Snowboards comments about good headlines are also to be considered when using the related posts plugin.

I picked up on TWO things here yesterday AFTER I had left my silly note.

One was like you are all saying HEADLINES are the key.

So I decided to go one step further.

I edited my title to something completely abstract:

You may have seen it>>> “GET IN BED WITH ME :) SERIOUSLY!”

Not only did I do that but I noticed snowboarddude hyperlinked ALL his words BLOG and RUSH.

So I rewrote my introduction on my blog hyperlinking the words with certain urls that I want others to visit.

      I also highlighted them.

Today both my forum got three signups and one of my affiliate programs got two signups and they have been dead for over a week!

Plus my credits have been going up and down for the last 12 hours between 250-380 average.

      Remember a couple things.

      1. You will NOT be earning any PR backlinks from this. it is javascript and Google does not see any links in javascript. Your’e MUCH better off generating real links.

      2. Keep track of your own referrers. Don’t blindly trust the things you see. The first thing you’ll notice is your impressions are likely nowhere near your page views. This is typical of any offsite tracking. So that part is normal. but if you want to know how successful something is, track it. I did some looking and in 1 day got 1400 *credits* and 0 incoming hits.

If you want to display spam and irrelevant links on your blog, then BlogRush is the answer!

Haha… unless they implement some sort of Quality Score (a la Google AdWords), this thing will be full of crap. BlogRush shows links from shitty blogs from people who can’t even use a spell checker.

The only winner in this is John Reese.

    114. Holly Says:

Has anyone seen an address where one can write to anyone at BlogRush? So far I haven’t.

I have been enjoying using it, and yes, we’re now seeing it everywhere. My concerns are that the categories need to be adjusted. I have a Personal Development type of blog and there is no clearly defined place to put it and have viable content links come up in BlogRush.

I do appreciate the fact that they’ve sent out some emails.

While most of your post here makes sense, I do not know why you cry about people doing paid posts for others. Maybe I didn’t understand correctly and you meant “don’t promote on your blog that you do paid posts”, like placing big fat ads in a sidebar that tells your readers. That I could agree on, however, nothing wrong with writing some tasteful fun review of a company site or CREATIVE way to do sponsored posts, if they blend in nicely with what your blog is all about. I do sponsored posts on my catblog for example and do not feel bad or slutty about it. Some people would call affiliate marketers already “information whores” as they promote products and services that they found fit a niche, and promote those and “recommend it” to the right crowd with money, no matter if you actually use products yourself etc. - but lets not get there, it is as ridiculous as the claim that sponsored posts are actually “slutty”.

I love how a blogrush endorsed blog doesn’t even use blogrush! Also what does it mean if your credits are in the negative? I’m at negative 360 credits - I’d say they think I cheated but that make no sense since I obeyed all of their stupid rules - also why would be banned result in negative 360 - wouldn’t they just put it to 0?

Or do they expect me to earn 360 credits before I can start earning credits, all the while not receiving any traffic for the traffic I send them? Yea they wish, if they think I’m going to give them 360 views on my blog for free -without anything in return then they belong in a nut house. I understand some people are trying to game the system but this is so hilariously bad that I’m tempted to cheat the system or even tell others how to - I see some glaring vulnerabilities that would be near impossible to detect, I’m not capitalizing on this because personally I don’t need traffic this badly.

Oh well, good luck Reese you’ll need it in this pyramid scheme.

Personally, I’ve had BlogRush for months and it has given me a whole lot of nothing. I’ve had much more luck with entrecard, which I’ve only had for days. If BlogRush does not generate me a significant amount of traffic by the end of this week, I am removing it because it’s all hype and no action.
